At bottom, all the types in this set of postcards are trying to earn a crust by entertaining people. Some of the cards were made to publicize their abilities and others to record them in action. Since most were made in the first quarter, or first decade even, of the last century, we can see in them a lot of fun and thrill that no longer occurs.

The demise of the circus, the dearth of pavement musicians, the fear of disapproval at incorrect laughter, together with the role of ubiquitous TV, have changed our world.
